Shame

Shame-the film about a New York sex addicts with down in his own obsession, leaving a trail of unfulfilled relationships his way. The film was directed by Steve McQueen, the guy who gave us the controversial 2008 film Hunger, and again his film stars Michael Fassbender, this time as sex addicts, Brandon Sullivan, who receives a surprise visit from his equal as disturbed sister, Sissy Sullivan, played by English actress Carey Mulligan.
Shame is an interesting intrusive film that balances on the surface of a wide variety of subjects, but who never seem to quite know where direct its focus. The result is a story with an inconsistent flow, making it difficult to suspend your disbelief and be involved in what is happening on the screen.

The film begins by introducing the Brandon Sullivan as a successful businessman that balances life work with his personal life as a sex addict. Every morning he wakes up with a new girl in his bed, he watches the excessive amounts of Porn and masturbates as he has had a chance. As the film progresses the boundaries between work and personal life is beginning to blur, and when his sister, Sissy, one night shows in his apartment without warning, convincing Brandon to allow her to stay, things quickly start to escalate. With his sister around Brandon no longer has the freedom to exercise their sexual urges freely as before, and this leads him to begin to recognise the full scope of its problems, and soon he and Sissys relationship is put to the test when they both become aware of their mutual problems caused by the family's troubled past. The questions then become: are any of them strong enough to do something about it, and you can actually help someone if you are concerned about?

Mary Harron American Psycho with its emotionally detached portray the main character somewhat resembling shame, but the difference between the two is that American Psycho Patrick Bateman is aware his lifestyle, no shame shame is if Brandon Sullivan and how he manages his shame that "different" while trying to still retain the façade of success.

Plot-Wise shame has several loose ends and portrayal of Brandon's obsession with sex might have shown more clearly, because it is not until very late in the film you actually think Brandon might have a problem that is more serious than him just be an average guy who happens to enjoy sex a lot! The script is also quite Loose. For example, Brandon and Sissys background only touched on a very short, giving the impression of a lazy writer. Declaration that the light should either have completely omitted or has been further developed, either, which would have given the film a stronger message. By completely exclude any explanation of Brandon's background a more contemporary portrayal would have been made, such as American Psycho did with great success. By developing the background for the two siblings additional on the other hand, one would be more curious because you would get an idea of how, why, they have developed such extreme attitudes toward love and sex.

Besides the plot problems, there is a problem with acting. Interaction between Brandon and Sissy seems rather forced and awkward; something I can't figure out if deliberate to expose their uneasy relationship, or if there is a problem with acting. No matter what, never seems to fully convince me. Portrayal of Brandon which individual is acceptable, but I think the mental aspects of Brandon's addiction undetected sufficiently thoroughly, either by deed or by close-up pictures of Brandon's facial expressions.

This is overall a decent film that deserves a display, if not for the plot and acting, then for the idea and well framed pictures. This film, however, is certainly not for the faint of heart. It is not for nothing that this film was rated 18. Extreme acts of nudity, sexual intercourse, masturbation and urinating are exhibited in shame, and dare to try to unveil the decline of a sex addict do just that, and that is where the quality of the film lies – in the intrusion of the story and picture. The title of the film reveals the layer that this movie has to offer: it wants to explore the shame that Brandon feels, but at the same time very graphic pictures this film consists of allowing the viewer to explore their own disgrace, its own limits on what is acceptable and not-and the people who walked out during the screening, I assume this film was far beyond their borders!

The above author's byline must be attached to work on is deployed.
